Sound familiar?

The things that used to work don't work anymore.

These are the words we hear from smart, capable people every single week. Read them slowly. See how many are yours.

  • "I have a closet full of beautiful clothes, and I don't feel good in any of them."
  • "I eat well. I work out. And the scale keeps going the wrong way."
  • "By 3 PM I'm done. I have nothing left for the people I love."
  • "My partner cut out beer for a week and lost ten pounds."
  • "I live my whole life with a growth mindset. Except here."
  • "I just want to feel like myself again."
  • You've solved harder problems than this. That's exactly why it's so frustrating when effort stops paying off. Here's the thing: it was never about effort.

What's actually happening

Your knowledge is fine. The biology underneath it shifted.

In midlife, three things tend to change at once. Each one makes the next one louder. And the classic advice, eat less and work out harder, can quietly make all three worse.

Hormones

Insulin works harder

As hormones like estrogen and testosterone shift with age, your body can become less sensitive to insulin. More insulin is needed to do the same job, and your body leans toward storing energy, often around the middle, even when you haven't changed how you eat.

Stress

Cortisol stays switched on

Running a career, a household and everyone's calendar keeps your stress response running in the background. Elevated cortisol pushes insulin even higher and drives the late-day cravings and grazing that feel impossible to control.

Strategy

Restriction reads as an emergency

Cutting harder and training longer can signal scarcity to a body that's already stressed. So it holds on. That's why the plan that worked at 35 can backfire at 48.

"This literally changed when you weren't looking."

Once you understand the system, the self-blame has nowhere to live. And the path forward gets a lot simpler than you'd think.

A different set of rules

We don't eliminate. We optimize.

The old rules
Shape Up: Body & Mind
Count calories, track macros, log every bite
No counting. Portions measured in your hands, not grams.
Cut out bread, wine and anything fun
Social foods are built in, including dinners out and a glass of wine.
Long, punishing workouts to burn it off
Short, strategic movement, often 2 to 15 minutes, chosen to support insulin sensitivity.
Push harder when it stops working
Calm the stress response so your body feels safe enough to let go.
A generic plan and an app that judges you
Two coaches who build your personal user manual, and track the data for you.

The method

Body and mind, worked on together. That's the point.

Most programs treat food, exercise and stress as separate projects. Shape Up treats them as one system, because in your body, they are.

Eat

Food strategized for your biology

Meals timed and built to support insulin sensitivity and a calmer gut. Nothing is forbidden. The goal is a body that naturally prefers the right amount.

Move

Workouts that give energy back

Short, purposeful sessions that fit between meetings and school runs. We use exercise strategically, not as punishment, so you finish with more energy than you started with.

Calm

A stress response that stands down

Simple daily practices that lower your baseline stress load, so cortisol stops working against every other change you make.

Rewire

Brain training, 60 to 90 seconds a day

Andrea's signature mental wellbeing strategies quiet the threat response and grow the part of you that's curious and capable. This is the piece people tell us they didn't know they needed.

Your four months

Energy first. Then the weight starts to let go.

Four months is deliberate. It takes about two months to dial in food and movement, and two more to pressure-test it against real life, so the results stay after we're done.

  1. First days

    Energy returns

Most people notice their energy shift within the first few days. The afternoon crash is usually the first thing to go.

  2. Month 1

    Food, dialed in

Your coaches tune meals to your body, your schedule and the restaurants you actually go to.

  3. Month 2

    Movement, tested

We find the exercise your body responds to, and drop what isn't earning its place.

  4. Months 3 and 4

    Built for real life

Travel, holidays, a hard week at work. We practice through all of it so the habits hold.

People who'd tried everything

They weren't failing. They were using the wrong tools.

Goal weight in 90 days

A high-pressure executive with constant travel and menopause in the mix. Calorie counting and food elimination had wrecked her relationship with food. She hit her goal through Thanksgiving, year-end at work, Christmas and New Year's.

Tammy D.  Executive

180 to 153 in 12 weeks

After a lifetime of yo-yo dieting, Mara stopped starting over. Twelve weeks in, she'd released 27 pounds and was still going.

Mara P.

25 lbs in 13 weeks

A design executive, cookbook author and food blogger who had struggled with her weight her whole life. She kept going and lost over 50 pounds in six and a half months, without giving up the food she loves.

Kylie  Design executive

Individual results vary based on starting point, health history and consistency. Shape Up is a lifestyle coaching program and is not a substitute for advice from your medical provider.

Andrea Marcellus, founder of AND/life

Meet Andrea

She did all the "right" things too. She gained 25 pounds.

For the first sixteen years of her career, Andrea counted calories, cut foods, wore a heart rate monitor and lived in the gym. She ended up exhausted, sore, hungry and heavier than she'd ever been.

So she took the opposite approach. Exercising less, eating the foods she loves, keeping her social life, and getting clear on her why. She got into the best shape of her life in her forties, after having babies at 37 and 40, and has kept it through Hashimoto's and perimenopause.

Today she eats out, has wine with dinner, and has spent 34 years helping thousands of people do the same thing she did: stop fighting their body and start working with it.

"Your body has the answers. We just haven't asked it the right way yet."

This program isn't for everybody. Here's who it's built for.

It's a fit if you

  • Are in your late 30s, 40s or 50s and your body stopped responding the way it used to
  • Already know the basics and are tired of being told to eat less and move more
  • Want to lose weight without giving up dinners out, travel or a glass of wine
  • Want a natural, sustainable approach, with or without other medical support
  • Are ready to give this four focused months of your attention

It's probably not a fit if you

  • Want a quick fix before an event next week
  • Prefer a rigid meal plan and a strict list of rules
  • Aren't ready to make this a priority right now

The next step

A real conversation about your body, not a sales pitch.

Your strategy call is 60 minutes with Andrea's team. We'll look at what's going on, what you've tried and how your life is structured. You'll walk away knowing what's actually happening and what your smartest next step is, whether that's working with us or not.

On your call, we'll

  1. Map your history, stress load and daily schedule
  2. Explain what's likely driving your results right now
  3. Show you what a personalized plan would look like
  4. Decide together whether Shape Up is the right fit

Questions

What people ask before they book.

I've tried everything. Why would this be different?

Because most of what you've tried was designed for a body that no longer exists. Calorie math and long workouts don't address insulin sensitivity or stress load, which is where midlife weight gain tends to live. Shape Up starts there. People in perimenopause and menopause are among the most successful in the program.

I'm on HRT. Shouldn't that fix it?

HRT can be an important part of your care, and we work alongside it. It doesn't automatically undo the insulin and stress patterns that have built up, which is why many people on HRT still feel stuck. Always keep your medical provider in the loop.

Should I just try a GLP-1 instead?

That's a decision for you and your doctor, and we won't judge either way. Many people who come to us want a natural path that builds habits that last. Others are already on a GLP-1 and want to protect their results. We'll talk through your situation on the call.

I don't have time for this.

That's exactly who it was designed for. Workouts are often 2 to 15 minutes, the brain training takes about a minute a day, and your coaches handle the tracking. It fits into your life rather than asking your life to fit around it.

Will I have to give up wine, bread or eating out?

No. Social food is part of the plan. Andrea eats out often and has wine with dinner. We optimize what you eat and when. We don't eliminate.

I have a thyroid condition or a complicated health history.

Many of our clients do. The method works on underlying systems like stress, insulin sensitivity and gut health rather than one condition, and your coaches personalize everything. Bring it up on the call so we can give you a straight answer.

What does it cost?

We'll walk through investment and payment options on your call, once we know it's the right fit. Payment plans and HSA/FSA options are available.

The next four months will pass anyway. Let them change something.

You've been carrying a lot, and pushing hard for a long time. You deserve a strategy that accounts for that, instead of asking you to push harder.
